Manifesta 12 Education Hub, transforms a regular bus into a mobile educational platform for the city of Palermo.
Conceived and developed by Enorme Studio in conjunction with design and fine arts students from the University of Palermo, the project transforms an everyday means of transportation into a space for learning, meeting, and cultural activation.
During the Manifesta Biennial 12, this converted bus worked as traveling embassy, toolbox and artificial garden, bringing art, education and dialogue to all neighborhoods of the city.
The intervention is articulated around three key concepts: embassy, toolbox and garden.
On the outside, a mirrored surface allows the bus to blend into each neighborhood, disappearing into the urban landscape when it stops, but announcing its mission as it moves.
Inside, mobile compartments are available for furniture, utensils, and teaching materials, allowing workshops and community events to be held anywhere in the city.
In the rear, a symbolic garden, formed by a layering of fruit stickers, transforms the space into a place of rest, enjoyment, and connection.
The project thus becomes a mobile cultural infrastructure, which brings the biennial closer to the urban margins, democratizing access and participation in cultural creation.
For five months, the Education Hub toured Palermo generating meetings, workshops, outdoor screenings and interactive activities, acting as relational device between the biennial and local communities.
Its impact was twofold: on the one hand, as an example of innovation in the use of mobile public space; on the other, as a pedagogical tool co-created with students, which actively involved citizens in the creative process and in the cultural development of their environment.
The project not only activated neighborhoods, but redefined the Limits of education and art in motion, proposing a replicable model of sustainable, inclusive and flexible urban intervention
